Environmental Research Seminar: “Drinking Water as a Source of Micro- and Nanoplastic Exposure”
With John Lenhart, PhD (Professor, Civil Environmental and Geodetic Engineering, Ohio State University)
John J. Lenhart is a Professor of Environmental Engineering and Co-Director of the Ohio Water Resources Center at The Ohio State University. He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1997. Following that, he was a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at the United States Geological Survey, where he applied advanced X-ray and infrared spectroscopy to evaluate the coordination of lead and uranium to mineral surfaces. From 2000 to 2003, Dr. Lenhart worked at Yale University as a postdoctoral associate evaluating mechanisms responsible for colloidal particle transport in soil and groundwater systems. In 2003, he joined the faculty at Ohio State in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering. He became the Co-Director of the Ohio Water Resources Center in 2012 and in 2019 he was appointed as the Associate Chair.
Dr. Lenhart’s research interests involve evaluating the fate and transport of contaminants in natural and engineered systems, with an emphasis on characterizing interfacial processes in heterogenous systems. Current projects include identifying conditions that foster microplastic removal during drinking water treatment, characterizing colloidal forms of phosphorous and their role in the formation of algal blooms, optimizing the use of activated carbon as a treatment approach for cyanotoxins, and identifying pathways for critical mineral and resource recovery from water and wastewater. Dr. Lenhart has authored or co-authored more than one hundred publications and is the recipient of an NSF Career Award.
